In her emotional commencement speech to the graduating class of Immaculate Heart High School, Meghan Markle noted, “The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing.”
In her six-minute address, she remembered a time when she was volunteering during her sophomore year at the all-female school. One of her former teachers, Ms. Pollia, said to her, “Always remember to put other’s needs above your own fears.”
A recent email from Anchorage-based nonprofit,
Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC), reminded me of Meghan’s words. This Basics & More Alum is dedicated to providing safe shelter for domestic abuse victims, as well as intervention and prevention against domestic violence.
This email came in response to the current movement across the nation that is a fight against racism. Like I’ve said, it’s not hard to unequivocally state your position and make it known where you stand. And AWAIC does just that.
There’s a lot to appreciate about this email. The words “We know we can do better” are impactful. They’re rooted in honesty and a direct response to not only ongoing events, but the societal problems that spurred them. These are problems that demand action, and AWAIC goes into actual detail about how they will be doing better, while inviting their supporters to participate in this effort. It’s a message of solidarity, honesty, and action, and it’s a great communication piece.
I also appreciate the list of resources toward the end: a clickable link for a comprehensive list of books, movies, articles, and podcasts that includes many resources I’ve not seen before.
