Remember Google Wave?
How about Google Buzz?
Yeah, me neither. And as much as I love tech, I’m so not an early adopter. Twitter had been online for a full two years before I dipped a toe in the water. My beloved Mac is four years old and still going strong.
Yet something about Google+ lured me in and when I fished around for an invite, Ephraim Gopin (@fundraisinisfun) was kind enough to shoot one my way. I’ve been enjoying the exploration.
Google+ has been described as a fusion of Twitter and Facebook. Yet there’s something more immediate about it, definitely a bit more casual, while at the same time it offers the potential for far greater depth in communicating.
Last weekend I enjoyed my first G+ hangout, meeting with fundraising professionals from Seattle, Florida, Canada and Israel in a video chat.
Several of my favorite bloggers have been sharing their thoughts about G+.
John Haydon suggested that nonprofits, already spread too thin, not bother with Google+, reminding us that it’s only another tool and, in the end, “social media is about people, not technology.”
Ephraim Gopin thinks that Google+ shows potential as the one tool with “everything under one roof necessary to communicate, engage and connect with donors, followers, volunteers and workers online. Nonprofits: What could possibly be better than that?!
And Claire Wagner wonders what, if anything, will fall by the wayside if Google+ truly takes off.
In the few short weeks that I’ve been exploring G+ I can see enormous potential for nonprofit organizations. I love the idea of using Hangouts to connect with supporters, volunteers and board members. I can definitely see the possibility of G+ replacing my RSS feed. Imagine the possibilities for real dialogue!
Have you tested the Google+ waters?
