How are small to mid-sized nonprofits using the power of direct mail?  Join us every Wednesday for What’s in my Mailbox.

This extraordinary letter from WarChild comes by way of Rory Green, Fundraiser Grrl, and extraordinary fundraiser.  Rory writes:  “The envelope got my attention right away. And once I opened it the story hooked me. And the email they sent a few days later was the perfect reminder to make a donation.”  Click here to read the email.

Paduom Simon shares the deeply personal story of exactly what it is like to work in the landlocked country of South Sudan in northeastern Africa.  The reader gets a vivid picture of the day to day fears and challenges of living in a war zone.  It’s compelling and heartbreaking and vivid and real.  And you, the donor, are there:

“Knowing donors like you believe in our work keeps me motivated, and hopeful for my country’s future.”

“Every day, your donations give a deserving child or mother an opportunity to thrive.”

There are many lessons in this beautiful piece.  How many letters have you read that never get to the point of an actual ask?  I love the very assumption that the caring reader will give:  “Whether you go online to give, or mail in your donation today…”  The personal request at the end to get to know you better.  The photograph of a smiling Paduom.  Click on images to read.
