This past Sunday, we celebrated Mother’s Day, encouraging love and appreciation for moms everywhere. Whether it was breakfast served in bed, homemade cards, a spa pampering, or indulging in brunch at the Radnor Hotel (yes, that last one was me), moms were reminded of how special they are in countless ways.
I was delighted to see that my inbox reflected the efforts of several nonprofits to send Mother’s Day-themed emails to their supporters. Here’s a sampling of what I got. I found a broad range of communications and approaches. Some were simple yet impactful, including a few words of text and a powerful image, like the message that I received from charity: water.
A short email from Save the Chimps reinforced the specialness of the bonds between mothers and children that extend from humanity and all across species. Seriously, how cute is this chimp family?!
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand sent me a heartfelt message that included a lovely photo of her two boys and instantly reminded me of the special bond between my children and I. The personal touch here made this one stand out, and I found her message easy to relate to.
Mercy Corps shared the story of a struggling mother in Guatemala, Rosa, who benefited from one of their programs and learned how to make nutritious meals, enabling her to better nurture and strengthen her children. Their message was an impactful reminder of how, regardless of what separates people, in reality, all mothers want the best for their children, and that unites us.
The AHA Foundation began by featuring imagery that functioned as a meme, beautiful in its simplicity and symbolism. Their heartfelt ode to mothers tied in seamlessly with their crucial mission and work: ending violence toward females and securing their freedom, as well as their plea for support. At first, it was about mothers, and then, it was about all women, and yet their message speaks to everyone.
Sandy Hook Promise allowed me to once again connect personally with a fellow mother, but in a decidedly more intense and emotional manner. Through Jackie Barden’s first-person account of the pain and devastation she experienced over the tragic loss of her son, Daniel, I empathized so strongly that I was overcome. The loss of a child to senseless violence is a mother’s worst nightmare. I’m not sure that the inclusion of a donate button in their email was even necessary. Jackie’s story was just that compelling.
Did you notice a flurry of mother-centric messages in your inbox? I’d love for you to share your favorites. Like mothers, each one I came across was special in its own way. Collectively, they’re a terrific reminder of a belief that I’ll never quit preaching: regardless of what day of the year it is, it’s always prime time to connect with your supporters. And when you can frame it around a theme? All the better! Get creative with it.
