Post Dallas, Everytown for Gun Safety reached out to me through the words of Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Her perspective shed some fresh light on an all-too-familiar American story that has become our reality. Regardless of where we live, we cannot escape this tragedy, and with collective emotions running in overdrive, the results are almost paradoxical. We are united in how we grieve together, yet divided, as Shannon’s message points out, by those who say nothing can be done.
EFGS, speaking directly to me, reminded me, and no doubt countless others, that we don’t have to stop at hopelessness and helplessness. That as human beings who share a desire for change, we have the capacity to act, and to act now. That we can partake in a movement much bigger than ourselves and be the change we so desperately want to see. That we rise in solidarity and heal together, our resolve moving us forward and transforming the path of America’s narrative, and ultimately, our history. The urgency is there, and so are the possibilities.
